The Great Green Wall
$14 billion of new funding has been pledged by the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the French Government to develop a 15km wide band of trees and vegetation across Africa to improve the environment, grow food and create jobs.
It will stretch 8,000km from Senegal in the West to Djibouti in the East, running along the South of the Sahara desert.
I was so delighted when I read about this in the Financial Times on 16 January. It shows there is still vision and intelligence in a world where prejudice and conflict are in danger of gaining the upper hand.
By comparison, the Trump wall was intended to cover a distance of 3,145km and the main part of the Great Wall of China runs for 8,850km.
So now, a wall that nourishes.
