UK carton recycling – about time
However friendly milk and juice cartons may be to the environment, that’s not much use if there are no national recycling facilities.
The UK track record has been undeniably weak and late.
• Weak, with more than 50% of UK local authorities still failing to provide kerbside collection.
• Late, with any collected cartons still being sent to Italy, Spain or Sweden for recycling.
Fortunately, change is now on the way, with the first UK carton recycling plant due to come on stream this summer.
Once again, it’s the industry which is driving the change. Next, it’s for local government to provide better support on kerbside collection.
