Understanding Japan
At last week’s World Dairy Summit, I picked up some fascinating insights on Japan’s ‘super-greying’ society.
• 24% of the 127 million population were over 65 in 2012 and this will rise to 30% in 2025.
• 9.1 million live in food deserts, with homes more than 500 metres from a fresh food store and with no car.
• Department stores are unusually important for food shopping, with 5 groups accounting for 60% of national sales.
