There has been much coverage in the media about supermarkets targeting the reduction and ideally, the removal of secondary packaging, but how did we get here?

We are not looking at who to blame, this is about understanding the reason behind how and why we are where we are.
Before you answer this question, maybe we must consider why we have secondary packaging at all.
