Bottled water buoyant in Asia
The economic crisis of 1997/98 has become a distant memory for the Asian bottled water market, according to specialist consultants Zenith International in a new study for the Asia Bottled Water Association (ABWA). Zenith reports stunning growth of 45% since 1998 across 50 countries in Asia, the Transcaucasus, Middle East and North Africa.
Total sales reached 25,270 million litres in 2000, more than double the level of 1995. The region now represents 23% of global consumption, but pricing and currency pressures have held back the market's value to a 15% global share at US $4,700 million.
The largest three Asian markets of China, Indonesia and Thailand have joined the world's top ten. All have experienced particularly strong growth and each came close to the 5,000 million litre mark in 2000. China and Japan are the two leading markets by value, accounting for almost US $2,000 million between them. Danone is by far the biggest group in the region with a 16% volume share. No other company has as much as 3%.
The United Arab Emirates is the only country with consumption of over 100 litres per person in 2000. Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Thailand come next at 70-80 litres per person. Pakistan had the fastest growth in 2000 at 140%, followed by Indonesia with 63%. Jordan and Kuwait both achieved increases above 40% in 2000. The average was 21%.
"Consumption is rising so fast because economic growth is making bottled water more affordable and tap water supplies are often unable to keep up with population and urban growth," comments Zenith Research and Development Director Gary Roethenbaugh. "At an average of just 7 litres per person, however, the Asian bottled water market is still very young and we anticipate volumes will double again to over 50,000 million litres in 2005."
