Bottled water growth in every European country
European bottled water consumption grew by 4% in 1997 to almost 32,000 million litres, with positive results in every one of the 16 countries covered by a new report on the Bottled Water Market in Europe from specialist consultants Zenith International.
Finland had the fastest growth at 35%, followed by Ireland on 24% and Norway on 22%. The United Kingdom, Sweden and Portugal also achieved rises in excess of 10%.
"Increases were inevitably much smaller in the highest consuming countries of Italy, France and Belgium, where annual volumes are already well above 100 litres per person, " comments Zenith Chairman Richard Hall. "The Italian level of 143 litres is 13 times that of lowest placed Finland. "
Italy and Germany are the biggest overall markets, each with shares approaching 26%. After France with 22% and Spain with 11%, no other country accounts for as much as 4%.
Amongst other findings in the Zenith report, Austria has the largest sparkling water share at 99% and Greece has the greatest still water interest at 94%. Mineral water controls 100% of the Italian market, while spring water rises to 66% in Sweden and table water takes 83% in Finland. Flavoured water is strongest in Scandinavia with up to a 48% share in Norway.
PET is fast catching up with glass, which retains a leading 43% of the European total. Glass is most important in Germany with a 92% share, while PET has climbed as far as 79% in France. PVC has a significant presence in 7 countries, cartons in 6 countries and cans in 4 countries. Zenith forecasts consumption will reach 35,500 million litres in 2002.
