Clouds don't cloud European bottled water
Poor weather that clouded much of Northern and Central Europe in the summer months of 2000 scarcely dampened bottled water growth during the year, according to Zenith International's third report on the Bottled Water Market in Europe, covering 16 countries in West Europe. Consumption rose by an extra 4.5% to an average 93 litres per person and a total of 36,300 million litres.
Italians are the highest consumers at 164 litres per person, with sales rapidly approaching 10,000 million litres. Adding in Germany, France and Spain, the top four countries account for over 80% of total volume. The fastest growth rates were achieved by Ireland at 22% and the United Kingdom at 16%, helping Britain become the fifth biggest market.
The most pronounced trend overall is a move towards still water in PET. PET has increased its share from 36% five years ago to 61% in 2000, mainly at the expense of glass and PVC. Still water has gained five share points since 1995 to 56%. Mineral water retains a dominant 82% share, but spring and table waters are building momentum.
"Another notable feature is the ability of even the most mature markets to continue growing," comments Zenith Chairman Richard Hall. "With increasing consumer awareness of bottled water's health benefits, our forecast of a further 18% rise by 2005 to almost 43,000 million litres is very much at the lower end of expectations," he concludes.
The 2001 Zenith Report on the Bottled Water Market in Europe contains 122 pages, including 16 country profiles and volumes for 98 companies. Contact Zenith International on tel +44 (0)1225 327900, fax +44 (0)1225 327901, e-mail info@zenithinternational.com
