Floodgates open for UK bottled water
Despite unfavourable weather conditions, particularly during the summer months of 2000, bottled water continues to outperform all other beverage sectors in Britain, according to Zenith International's tenth annual Guide to the UK Bottled Water Market. Consumption increased by 16% last year to 1390 million litres, compared with overall soft drinks growth of 3%.
"A variety of factors combined to make 2000 a great year for bottled water," observes Zenith Research and Development Director Gary Roethenbaugh. "Consumers are taking on board the merits of proper hydration. Regular users are drinking more and the customer base is widening."
The UK bottled water market is now ranked 15th in the world by volume and 9th by value. Strong marketing has undoubtedly helped companies drive growth, but demand is also being boosted by the convenience factor and bottled water's natural appeal. Recently formed Well Well Well and Highland Spring are the two largest UK producers, while world leaders Nestle and Danone own three of the top five brands.
Still water is the consumer's preferred choice, up 22% in 2000 to 79% of total volume. PET has risen to a 68% share, including over 400 million 50cl bottles. Natural mineral water accounted for a commanding 64%, but spring water reached 30% for the first time.
"Water coolers are making an increasing contribution too," adds Gary Roethenbaugh, "climbing 24% last year to 18% of the market, with the newly created Powwow brand powering into fourth position overall. We expect the market to grow at an annual rate of between 10% and 14% during the next five years. Consumption per person is way behind the levels witnessed on the continent. Reaching the 2000 million litre mark within three years should prove little more than a stepping stone", he concludes.
