Healthier lifestyles help drive UK soft drinks
The new 2002 UK Soft Drinks Industry Report from leading drinks consultancy Zenith International reveals that UK soft drinks consumption grew by 4% in 2001 to 12.4 billion litres, translating into a retail value of £8,600 million.
The UK soft drinks market reaffirmed its continuing momentum in 2001, with all sectors contributing. Bottled water once again recorded the most dramatic rise in volume sales, accounting for 35% of total growth, as the UK consumer became increasingly aware of the health benefits associated with proper hydration. Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh commented: "The continued success of bottled water small packs and water for coolers helped drive the market forward in 2001. Bottled water is increasingly seen by the UK consumer as an ideal combination of nature, purity, refreshment and health."
Fruit juice sales also benefited from the demand for healthy products, achieving a record 9% growth in 2001. According to Gary Roethenbaugh, "consumers clearly understand the health benefits associated with fruit juice. The entry price for new consumers can be low and there is a wide range of extension possibilities, such as chilled and flavour blends, once you've been introduced."
The UK soft drinks industry is expected to see a steady rise in consumption during the next five years, increasing by over 2,000 million litres, at an annual growth rate of 3% or more. "Ultimately, people enjoy soft drinks. They represent an affordable and increasingly healthy pleasure that no longer appeals exclusively to the young but to adults too," concludes Gary Roethenbaugh.
