Latin America bottled water market uncovered
Bottled water consumption in Central and South America came close to 31 billion litres in 2005, a 3.4% rise on 2004, according to leading beverage consultancy Zenith International in its first ever report on Bottled and Bulk Water in Latin America. The new report analyses 20 national markets across the continent, identifying the general trends and practices which can be seen regionwide at the same time as exploring the distinct characteristics of individual countries.
The region is led by Mexico, which boasted sales of more than 14 billion litres in 2005, giving it a 45% share from consumption of over 130 litres per person. Brazil follows with a 25% share from a volume of 7.6 billion litres.
In another Zenith first, the report also quantifies the water cooler market in Latin America and assesses the day to day usage of cooler machines across the region. For the end of 2005, Zenith estimates there were 2.4 million units throughout Latin America, the vast majority being installed in the two leading bottled water markets of Mexico and Brazil.
"Coolers represent a very different business model in Latin America compared with other regions worldwide," commented Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh. "Bulk bottled water is firmly entrenched in the majority of Latin American markets and, because of low consumption levels in many countries, we feel there is considerable potential for increasing both bottled water consumption and cooler penetration levels in the future."
Bottled water has been considered a necessity in much of Latin America due to poor quality tap water. Sales have achieved consistent growth in recent years, despite economic difficulties which affected many countries at the start of the decade. Zenith attributes this to not just the perception of bottled water as a basic foodstuff but also a growing awareness of health and wellness issues.
Zenith forecasts continued annual growth in water volumes and cooler unit numbers until 2009, taking consumption towards 36 billion litres and the number of water coolers to 3.1 million.
The 2006 Zenith Report on Latin America Bottled and Bulk Water contains 331 pages including 20 market tables, 105 company profiles and a detailed market commentary. Contact Zenith International on tel +44 (0)1225 327900 or e-mail info@zenithinternational.com.
