Natural forces double UK bottled water market again
Bottled water sales coolly climbed another 12% in Britain last year to almost 1600 million litres and £900 million in retail value, according to the 11th annual Guide to the UK Bottled Water Market from specialist consultants Zenith International.
The market doubled in the first half of the 1990s and has now doubled again since 1996. Still water for everyday use is the main driving force, gaining a further 16% in 2001 to reach an overall share of 82%.
"Bottled water is increasingly seen as an ideal combination of nature, purity, refreshment and health," commented Zenith Chairman Richard Hall. "More people are catching on to the need for proper hydration too.
"Over 500 million half litre bottles were bought in 2001, many with sports caps for the added convenience of people on the move. More than 1500 million cups were filled from water coolers in offices, shops and reception areas."
UK produced waters now account for 75% of consumption led by Highland Spring, but the two top selling brands are Evian and Volvic from France. Water cooler labels come fourth and fifth. Danone Activ' with calcium was the year's fastest growing brand, jumping straight into 8th position after the biggest launch ever seen on the UK market.
"We foresee consumption rising by at least another 1000 million litres over the next five years, implying a continuing annual growth rate of 10% or more," concluded Richard Hall.
