Over 20% growth again for UK water coolers
2001 was another excellent year for the UK water cooler industry, according to Europe's leading drinks consultancy Zenith International, with strong growth witnessed in both unit numbers and water consumption. Zenith's 2002 Guide to UK Water Coolers comments that, considering the established nature of UK coolers, it is remarkable that the market registered an advance of 75,000 units during 2001 to 425,000 units - a rise of 21%. Consumption was up an even higher 25% as more people recognised the need for proper hydration throughout the day.
Cooler water volume contributed an outstanding 38% of overall bottled water market growth in 2001, doubling in three years to 320 million litres. Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh elaborated: "Water for coolers now makes up one fifth of the entire bottled water market and is expected to continue gaining share in the coming years. The cooler industry has a strong service culture and there is increasing awareness of the relationship between health and hydration among consumers. This is reducing the influence of external factors, such as the weather."
Further changes to the industry's structure added excitement to the past year, as Nestlé made the most significant acquisition in West European cooler history, with the purchase of Ionics' water cooler division, Aqua Cool. The increasing presence of international players and cross border activity suggests that the future remains bright for the industry. According to Gary Roethenbaugh, "the UK should continue to take the lead in shaping European cooler dynamics. Strong rates of growth can be expected for at least the next five years, pushing the UK industry total to around 750,000 units by 2006."
